After two frustrating losses to Concordia earlier this season, the Orrick Bearcats bounced back Tuesday night with a 63-54 I-70 Conference victory over the visiting Orioles.
Clayton Jones hit for a game-high 25 points, and Eric Rodenberg added 12 more to help push the Bearcats to 2-4 in league play and 6-14 overall. Orrick Coach Morgan Dickson said the win was big for his team.
“Concordia had beaten us twice before, plus our kids believed we could win,” he said. “We’re playing with more confidence and the last five games has shown that we’re capable of playing good basketball.”
The Bearcats got out to a 17-14 lead after the first 8 minutes, but Concordia battled back to tie the game at 29-29 by halftime. Jones heated up for the Bearcats in the third period as he hit for 10 of his nightly total to help Orrick outscore the Orioles 16-13 to take a 45-42 lead into the fourth frame.
Dakota Harth scored 9 for the Bearcats with 6 of those coming in the fourth quarter as Orrick held off Concordia, 18-12. Harth hit 4 of 6 free throws in the final period.
Orrick ended the night making 11 of 21 free throws, with the Orioles hitting 18 of 28 attempts.
Also scoring for the Bearcats were Cameron McGlothlin with 6, Joe Kaufman with 3, while Preston Karnes, Ty Griffin, Luke Searcy and Kalija Rogers chipped in 2 apiece.
Concordia, now 0-5 in conference and 4-16 overall, was led in scoring by Carter Brown and Cale Brunkhorst with 14 points each.
