It was a good opening quarter for the Orrick Bearcats Thursday night at Faucett against Mid Buchanan, but the remaining three belonged to the Dragons in a 68-35 victory.
Mid Buchanan held a 14-10 lead after the first period, but the Dragons began to pick up the pace on offense with a 27-point outburst in the second quarter. Mid Buchanan’s Hunter White led the charge with 9 of his game-high 24 points in that frame as the Dragons built a 41-24 lead at the half.
Orrick Coach Morgan Dickson said his team appeared to show the effects of playing its third game in four nights.
“We started out strong and played pretty well the first quarter, especially on defense,” he said. “The rest of the game, we looked tired and were a step slow, which is disastrous against a team like Mid Buch. We have to be mentally ready for our courtwarming game tonight against Santa Fe.”
The Dragons, ranked ninth in the latest Class 2 poll, continued to expand their lead in the third period with a 17-9 scoring edge, and a 58-33 cushion heading into the final 8 minutes.
Clayton Jones topped the Bearcat scoresheet with 10 points, with Cameron McGlothlin adding 9, and Dakota Harth scoring 6. Orrick got 2 points apiece from Kalija Rogers, Anthony Sevart, Eric Rodenberg, Ray Brooks and Ty Griffin.
The Bearcats hit 3 of 12 free throws, while Mid Buchanan connected on 18 of 25 from the stripe.
