After a tough loss at the buzzer just one night earlier, the Richmond Lady Spartans took a strong defensive effort to Marshall Tuesday and left town with a 54-22 win over the Owls.
The Lady Spartans picked up their fourth win of the season as they held Marshall scoreless in the opening frame, and single digit scoring the rest of the way. Richmond Coach David Littrell is pleased with the way his defense has played the past two games.
“We are doing a much better job getting in the passing lanes and closing out on the ball,” he said. “We are seeing the floor very well in our offensive sets, which is leading to more assists and much better team basketball.”
Richmond held a 9-0 lead after the opening frame and a 16-8 second-period scoring advantage staked the Lady Spartans to a 25-8 cushion at the intermission. The Lady Spartans then outscored the 1-20 Owls 15-5 in the third quarter and closed out the night with a 14-9 edge.
Littrell added he was pleased with how his team continues to battle through a tough season.
“Too often teams start to drop their chins when their season doesn’t meet their expectations,” he said. “These girls are sticking to our goal that a season is all about playing one possession at a time anytime we are on the court.”
Kayla Hewitt led the Lady Spartan offensive effort with 15 points, and Chelsea Hook reached double figures for the second night in a row with 11.
Stephanie Williams added 9 points, followed by Baylyn Jennings with 8, Whitney Martens and Chelsea Dunwoodie with 3 each, Arissah Williams and Hannah Alpers with 2 apiece, and Hayley Padgett with a free throw.
Richmond converted 15 of 27 free throws, while Marshall hit 9 of 15 from the stripe.
