A box of chocolates, roses and perhaps jewelry for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day Saturday, and a ‘heart-y’ dose of laughter throughout the Mr. Valentine Pageant at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15 at the Farris Theatre makes for a ‘love-ly’ Valentine weekend.
If this year’s pageant is anything like the last ones, it promises lots of smiling and laughter as nine young men, ‘heart-throbs,’ from Richmond High School compete for the title of ‘Mr. Valentine 2009.’
Contestants are not randomly picked. Kim Wilton, NHS sponsor, explained that the young gentlemen must be juniors or seniors and are carefully selected by the National Honor Society officers.
“The guys seem very excited this year,” Wilton said. “We usually don’t have a problem finding guys to participate. In fact, this year a couple of them came and asked us if they could participate.”
The public is invited to come and support the guys as they compete in Sportswear, Talent, Formalwear and Question & Answer for Cupid’s crown. This year’s contestants are Dylan Barry, Phillip Corwin, Eddie Cox, Landon Green, Gus Hockemeier, Andy Mrosak, Trent Sisson, Blake Truby and Colby Bowers.
Who will be Mr. Valentine 2009? Come to the Farris Theatre this Sunday, enjoy the show and watch the crowning. All proceeds will be donated to the RHS Backpack Club, an extension of the program that has been operating at Dear and Sunrise elementary schools the past two years.
