The Orrick Bearcats held what seemed to be a comfortable 8-point halftime lead at home with Crest Ridge Tuesday night. However, turnovers and foul trouble caught up with the Bearcats in the second half and eventually in overtime as Orrick dropped a 69-58 I-70 Conference contest.
Joe Kaufman nailed a 3-point bucket for the Bearcats with 2 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Orrick had seen its halftime lead slip slightly to 42-35 entering the fourth period, but the Cougars took advantage of Bearcat miscues to take the lead with just over 1 minute remaining in regulation before Kaufman’s buzzer-beater.
Once in the extra session, Crest Ridge hit seven of 10 free throws, while Orrick managed just a field goal as the Cougars improved to 2-1 in the league and 6-8 overall. The Bearcats drop to 4-9 overall and 1-1 against the I-70.
“We committed too many fouls and turned the ball over late,” Orrick Coach Morgan Dickson said. “We had trouble scoring in the overtime and didn’t guard well enough.”
Crest Ridge ended the night hitting 20 of 39 free throws, while Orrick converted 6 of 13 from the stripe.
Clayton Jones led the Orrick scoring with 19 points with three 3-pointers, with Cameron McGlothlin adding 11 points – 9 of those in the second half, and the only 2 Bearcat points in overtime. Kaufman ended the night with 9 points, while Dakota Harth and Eric Rodenberg added 5 apiece. Also scoring for the Bearcats were Ty Griffin with 3, and Nick Lafferty, Kalija Rogers and Anthony Sevart with 2 each.
Chad Siegfried was one of four Cougars in double figures with 15 points, with Ben Owens adding 14, followed by Josh Cannon with 13 and Tucker Wagoner with 11.
