Richmond Coach David Littrell got another good night from his defense Friday in the consolation game of the Hamilton Tournament. However, his offense struggled as the Lady Spartans fell to Maysville 46-41.
Richmond hit just 13 of 40 shots from the field, and committed 32 turnovers for the night as the Lady Spartans’ record drops to 3-10 heading into this evening’s MRVC East contests at Carrollton.
Littrell said the miscues on offense Friday night stood out.
“We tried to force the ball in our offensive sets, instead of playing with poise and allowing our offense to develop opportunities,” he said. “Most of those turnovers were unforced. Of the 40 shots taken, we missed 20 inside the paint. It is very simple, we have to do a better job placing value on each offensive possession.”
The Richmond coach added his team has taken steps forward, but is waiting for them to put everything together in one night.
The Lady Spartans jumped out to an 11-10 lead after the first period, and held a 19-18 advantage at the half. Maysville held a 14-6 scoring advantage in the third quarter and each team added 15 in the final 8 minutes.
Baylyn Jennings led the Richmond scoring with 15, with Hannah Alpers adding 7. Also scoring for the Lady Spartans were Kayla Hewitt with 6, Whitney Martens with 5, including a 3-point bucket, with Chelsea Hook and Stephanie Williams scoring 4 each.
Britani Horseman and Cailyn McFee led the Maysville scoring with 11 apiece.
Richmond converted 7 of 15 free throws while the Wolverines hit 14 of 19.
