Make that three tournament finals in as many tries for the Spartan basketball squad this season. Richmond advanced to Saturday’s finals of the 15th Hamilton Tournament with a 60-44 victory over Maysville in Wednesday night’s semifinal.
Top-seeded Richmond, 10-5, used a balanced attack with five players scoring at least 8 points. Maysville relied on the scoring of Jake Mazurkewycz who hit for a game-high 22 points for the 10-4 Wolverines.
James Vance led the Richmond scoring for the second consecutive game with 12 points to go along with 4 rebounds, while brother Jon added 11 points and 7 rebounds.
The Spartans pulled away early, only to have Maysville battle back to stay in the game a couple of times throughout the night. Richmond closed out the final 2:12 of the opening period with a 7-0 run, and then scored the first 6 points of the second quarter. The Spartans continued their surge to open up a 26-8 lead with just under 3 minutes remaining in the half. Mazurkewycz then get hot to keep Maysville in the game.
The senior forward hit three consecutive baskets to help cut the deficit to 26-16. Richmond held a 30-18 lead at the half. Mazurkewycz once again led the Wolverine charge in the opening of the third quarter as he hit two buckets and a pair of free throws to keep Maysville within 10. The Spartan offense wasn’t as sharp as they were in the first half, but still managed to hold a 45-36 lead entering the final 8 minutes.
Robert Brewer and D’Andre Williams regained control inside for the Spartans in the fourth quarter to help Richmond take any momentum away from the fourth-seeded Wolverines. Brewer scored 4 of his 8 points, while Williams slashed his way inside for back-to-back buckets to help the Spartans open the final period with an 11-3 run to put the game away.
Brewer ended the night with 8 points and 6 rebounds, while Williams also added 8 points. Blaine Broderick and Jacob Swope once again provided the long-range touch for Richmond as Broderick hit for 8 points and Swope knocked down a pair of 3-pointers for his 6-point night. Also scoring for Richmond were Jordan Smith with 4 points and Kyle Carroll with a 3-point bucket.
