Orrick met a familiar opponent Friday night in the third-place game of the Wellington-Napoleon Tournament. For the second time in as many weeks and for the third time this season, the Lady Bearcats tangled with St. Mary’s, with Orrick putting together its best game of the year according to coach Mitch Comstock in a 57-44 victory.
It was the second win of the season over the Lady Trojans for Orrick as the Lady Bearcats improve to 7-3 heading into I-70 Conference play Tuesday at St. Paul’s.
“We were extremely aggressive in our press and did a great job of taking care of the ball on offense,” Comstock said. “Megan Swartz had the game of her life Friday. She had 14 points and did a good job of taking care of the ball and getting us into our offense.”
Swartz, who hit 5 of 7 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point land, dished out a pair of assists and was named to the all-tournament team. Amanda Rodenberg, who hit for 15 points with 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, was also selected to the all-tournament squad.
The Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and took control with a 21-9 second-period scoring advantage. Orrick stretched its 38-21 halftime cushion with a 12-5 scoring edge in the third frame.
