The Richmond Lady Spartan offense continued to struggle Monday night in a 53-19 loss at Lexington in the MRVC East opener for both teams. Richmond hit just five field goals and committed 29 turnovers as the Lady Spartans fell to 2-7 overall.
Richmond had its best quarter in the first 8 minutes despite trailing 12-8. The Lady Spartans hit four of their field goals in that period, but then could add just one more for the rest of the night.
Lexington, now 6-7 overall, broke loose for 17 points in the second quarter while Richmond converted 6 of 8 free throws for its only scoring as the home team expanded their halftime lead to 29-14. The second half was all Lexington with the Lady Spartans getting a Baylyn Jennings field goal and a free throw in the third quarter, and two free throws from Kayla Hewitt in the final 8 minutes.
Hewitt ended the night 6 of 9 from the free throw line to lead the Richmond scoring. Jennings and Stephanie Williams had 5 points apiece, with Whitney Martens adding 2 points, and Hannah Alpers, a free throw.
