The Orrick Lady Bearcats had a tough time holding onto the basketball Tuesday night in a 42-34 loss to St. Mary’s in the opening round of the Bill Burns Classic in Lathrop.
Orrick, now 3-2, will play in the consolation semifinal Thursday afternoon at 4:30.
Lady Bearcat Coach Mitch Comstock said his team committed too many turnovers, and that will be an area of focus in practice.
“We have to understand how valuable every possession is in a close game,” he said. “We need to get back in the gym and work toward coming away with a trophy at the end of the week, even though it is not the trophy we want.”
Three Lady Trojans reached double figures as St. Mary’s advances to the semifinals with a 4-2 record.
After being shut out in the first quarter, Amanda Rodenberg ended the night with 11 points to lead Orrick. Elizabeth Clark added 6 points, followed by Amy Isenhour with 5, and Leslie LaFavor with 4. Kristee Harris and Megan Swartz added 3 points apiece for Orrick with Gabriela Pigg scoring 2.
St. Mary’s held a 9-4 lead after one quarter, and 16-13 at the half. The Lady Bearcats managed just a Rodenberg field goal in the third quarter as St. Mary’s opened up a 25-15 advantage heading into the final 8 minutes.
Orrick converted 3 of 5 free throws, while the Trojans hit just 3 of 11.
