That first win for the Richmond Lady Spartan basketball team remains elusive 4 games into the young season.
The Lady Spartans found themselves in a deep hole early, and once again, they almost dug out of it, but by the end of the night Cameron held on for a 36-27 victory Monday night in the RHS gym.
Both teams had trouble getting out of the starting gate as the Lady Spartans and Lady Dragons tied 4-4 after the opening 8 minutes. Cameron then began to find its stride as the second period began with a 9-0 run on the way to building a 20-9 halftime lead.
The Lady Spartans cut into the visitors lead as the second half began. Cameron held a 24-11 cushion 2 minutes into the third period when Richmond battled back to pull within 8, 24-16 with just over a minute remaining. However, Cameron managed to score the final 6 points of the quarter to take a 30-16 advantage into the fourth.
The Lady Dragons held a double-digit lead through most of the final frame until Richmond scored 6 of the game’s final 8 points.
Baylyn Jennings led the Lady Spartan scoring with 8 points, with Stephanie Williams and Kayla Hewitt each adding 5. Also scoring for Richmond were Hannah Alpers with 4, Chelsea Hook with 3 and Arrisah Williams with 2.
Sarah Hall led all scorers with 10 for the 3-0 Lady Dragons, with Raelene Blanton chipping in 9.
The Lady Spartans hit 12 of 18 free throw attempts in the contest, while Cameron went to the line 4 times and converted on all but one.
