Brookfield used a 23-7 scoring advantage in the second quarter to jump to a huge lead Friday night over Richmond in the consolation game of the Husker Classic in Higginsville. It took a while for the Lady Spartans to recover, but a late rally fell short as Brookfield held on for a 46-42 victory.
Richmond opened the game strong by scoring the first 6 points, and the Lady Bulldogs had problems getting started. Brookfield did not get its first field goal until Jill Fletcher hit one with 31 seconds left in the opening frame to cut the Lady Spartan lead to 6-3. Brookfield began the second period with 6 unanswered points to make it a 9-0 run before Hannah Alpers ended the Richmond scoring drought with 4:42 left in the half. Kayla Hewitt added a pair of free throws for the Lady Spartans before Brookfield posted the next dozen points on the way to a 26-13 lead at the break.
The Lady Bulldog lead reached 38-19 with just under 3 minutes left in the third period before Richmond reeled off 8 straight points to cut the Brookfield lead to 40-27 entering the final frame.
The Lady Spartans began to chip away as they pulled to within 7 points with 3:43 left, before Brookfield pushed its lead back to 11 with 1:29 remaining. Richmond scored the final 7 points, but time ran out.
Arrissah Williams scored 12 points to lead Richmond, with 10 of those coming in the second half. Hewitt ended the night with 9 points with Stephanie Williams adding all 8 of her points in the final two quarters. Baylyn Jennings also scored 8 for Richmond, followed by Alpers with 3 and Chelsea Hook with 2.
Quinsie Gall was one of three Brookfield players to score in double figures with 12 points, followed by Fletcher with 11, and Brooke Harrington with 10.
