It didn’t take long for Orrick Coach Mitch Comstock to discover the reason his Lady Bearcats dropped a 40-31 decision to Concordia in the semifinals of the I-70 Conference Tournament Wednesday night. He could find 42 reasons – as in the number of turnovers his team committed in the meeting at Sweet Springs High School.
The Orioles also spent a considerable amount of time at the free throw line as well with Concordia hitting 18 of its 29 attempts, while Orrick made just 9 trips to the stripe and was good on 5 of them.
“We got out-shot from the free throw line 18-5,” Comstock said. “Hopefully this game will help us understand how to play in close games the rest of the year.”
The loss evens Orrick’s record to 1-1 and will put them in Friday’s third-place game against the tournament hosts with the opening tip coming at 7:30 p.m.
Amanda Rodenberg scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Bearcats, but Orrick could not find any more offense.
Elizabeth Clark, Megan Stagner, Shelby Harth, Gabriela Pigg and Amy Isenhour each added 2 points for the Lady Cats.
Laura Blankenship led the Concordia scoring with 12 points, while Tori Kopp added 11 as she hit 9 of 13 attempts from the charity stripe.
Concordia led 7-3 after the opening 8 minutes, but Orrick held the Orioles to just 4 free throws in the second period to tie the game at 11-11 at the break.
The Orioles took control in the third frame with a 19-10 scoring advantage, and closed the game with a 15-10 fourth quarter.
