A tough Hardin-Central defense came up with 25 steals Friday night leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 53-30 win at Stet to begin the 2008-09 hoops season.
Stet scored 10 points in the first quarter, but did not reach double digits in any of the three remaining frames.
Brooke Derstler paced the Hardin-Central scoring with 24 points, including 11 in the first period as the Lady Dawgs opened up a 19-10 lead. Derstler hit her only two 3-point buckets in the first quarter.
Megan Layman added 11 points for Hardin-Central with 7 of those in the first quarter.
She also led the way in steals with 6, while Derstler had 5 thefts to help pace the defense.
Another 19-point second quarter by Hardin-Central gave the visitors complete control of the game by halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs held a 9-7 scoring advantage in the third quarter for a 47-23 cushion entering the fourth frame.
Lindsey Arbogast added 8 points and 8 rebounds to the Hardin-Central attack, with Brianne McGuire scoring 2 points, but grabbing 7 rebounds.
Also scoring for Hardin-Central were Reanna Newham with 3 points to go along with 4 rebounds, Angelica Bradley and Jade Warren added 2 points apiece, with Kayla Carrillo hitting a free throw.
Hardin-Central held a 44-27 rebounding edge over the Lady Cardinals, who were led in scoring by Hayley Coats with 8, and Macy Koontz with 7.
