The Excelsior Springs Lady Tigers and Pleasant Hill Roosters captured team titles at the Missouri River Valley Conference cross country meet last week at Southview Park in Richmond.
Excelsior Springs ended the day with 31 points to easily outdistance runner-up Grain Valley by 23 points to take the girls’ championship. Holden grabbed third with 75, followed by Richmond with 92 points, Pleasant Hill with 108 and Odessa with 149. Defending champion Oak Grove, along with first-year member Harrisonville, did not field a full squad.
Deanna Barger had the top finish for Richmond. The Lady Spartan junior earned all-conference with her third-place time of 22 minutes, 11 seconds on a cool and damp day.
Grain Valley freshman Courtney Johnson turned in the winning time of 21:31, with Alex Dyer of Oak Grove taking second place, 28 seconds behind. Another freshman, Tiffany Propst led a group of Excelsior Springs runners that finished fourth through seventh.
Hannah Alpers turned in a personal-best of 23:41 to place 14th for the Lady Spartans, with LaToya Johnson timed in 25:51 to take 24th, followed by Krystal Denham with 29:08 for 30th spot, and Whitney Martens with 28:26 to grab 32nd.
Harrisonville had just two runners, but they finished first and fourth, while Pleasant Hill edged Holden for the team championship 49-51. Grain Valley was third with 82, followed by Excelsior Springs with 82, Odessa with 109, Richmond with 121 and Oak Grove with 174.
Maksim Korolev, a Harrisonville junior, won the individual title with a time of 16:43, with Jacob Colvin of Excelsior Springs finishing in second place with a time of 17:50, while Holden’s Justin Houser turned in the third-place time of 18:00.
Ray Smith had the top finish for Richmond with an 18th-place time of 19:44, with Stephen Smith just two spots behind in 19:55. Luke Bailey was 29th for the Spartans with 20:33, followed by Blaine Broderick in 31st with 20:40, Kayleb Dunwoodie, two spots behind with 21:02, and Josh Isgriggs was 35th with 21:15.
Mike Nelson had the low time for the Richmond junior varsity during the Richmond Invitational meet that followed the conference race with his 28th-place time of 21:43. Dylan White was next with a time of 22:22, to place 39th. Ben Moses set his personal-best with 22:23 to finish 40th, followed by Tyler Minnick, just a spot behind with 22:27, Stephen Cardwell with 22:34, which was good for 45th, and Zach Sanders with a 51st-place time of 23:02.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans will be competing Saturday in the Class 2, District 8 meet at Swope Park.
The boys will run at 11:30 a.m., with the girls’ race to start one hour later. The top 15 finishers will qualify for the state meet to be held Nov. 8 in Jefferson City.
