The Lady Spartan tennis team continued its growth Saturday with a sixth-place finish at the MRVC tournament held in Warrensburg. The Lady Spartans picked up 2 points, with Grain Valley totaling 42 points to take the title over runner-up Excelsior Springs.
The Lady Tigers earned 35 points, followed by Higginsville with 28 and Lexington with 21. Knob Noster took fifth with 5 points, while Carrollton, Harrisonville and Odessa failed to earn a point.
“Our conference tournament is a tough tournament to play in with such a young team,” Richmond Coach Zach Danner said. “However we had a full team and represented our school well. We had a total of seven girls competing and all of them played hard and showed that they will be contending for medals in the future.”
Hannah Jones had a good day for Richmond. The Lady Spartan junior took fourth place at No. 3 singles. Jones opened with an 8-6 win over Higginsville’s Sara Wiley, but then lost to top-seeded Jordan Heller of Lexington, 5-8, and to third-seeded Ashley Manns of Grain Valley by a 6-8 final. Danner said it was one of Jones’ best days since joining the team.
“Jones continues to improve her game and show the competitive desire needed to succeed in tennis,” he said. “She has the opportunity to make a big impact on the tournament next season. Her two losses were to extremely good tennis players and Jones gave her opponents very close matches. The team is very proud of her for placing at our conference tournament.”
Richmond’s remaining five singles players all lost in their opening matches. Brittany Munson lost to Higginsville’s Tricia Goring, 2-8; Ali Rickart lost to Grace Wilson of Harrisonville, 5-8; Kylie Root lost to Chelsey Rice of Grain Valley, 2-8; and Lissa Long dropped a 3-8 decision to Samantha West of Odessa.
The Lady Spartans failed to earn a doubles victory.
The No. 1 duo of Jones and Munson lost to Barr/Rice of Grain Valley, 0-8; Rickart/Hillegas lost at No. 2 to Wagner/Fisk of Knob Noster; and the No. 3 team of Wienen/Root fell to Wiley Sappington of Higginsville, 0-8.
