Lester Gayle Howard, 87, of Richmond, died at 6:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at the home of his grandson and granddaughter, Brian and Dana Rowan.
Mr. Howard was born May 13, 1921, in Rozel, Kan., the son of William Emmett and Nellie May (Pruett) Howard. He married Claudia J. Applegarth Oct. 25, 1945; she preceded him in death on March 17, 2008.
Mr. Howard was an assembler at the Ford Motor Company for 33 years before retiring in 1986. He was a Baptist. He lived in Camden, before moving to Richmond in 1961. He worked in the maintenance department for the Richmond School District for 16 years. Mr. Howard was a member of the U.A.W Local #249, and a member of the Camden Lodge #223 A.F. and A.M. He was a U.S. Army Veteran for the WWII 101st Airborne and a member of the Devil’s Brigade.
Survivors include: two sons and one daughter-in-law, Peter Howard of Midland, Texas, and John Howard and his wife, Sheila, of Manhattan, Kan.; two daughters, Mary Ann Rowan of Richmond, and Susie Browne of Kemah, Texas; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, his two brothers, Emmett Howard and David Howard, one sister, Mary Mason, and one grandchild, Greg Howard, preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Jude’s Hospital for Children or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 1, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in Richmond Memory Gardens with military honors provided by the Richmond American Legion Post #237 and the Richmond VFW Post #4398.
Arrangements were under the direction of Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
