Despite a few defensive lapses, the Richmond Lady Spartans were able to pick up their fifth win in their last six games Wednesday night with a 6-3 road victory at Holden. The win pushes the Lady Spartans to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the MRVC East heading into this afternoon’s home game with league-leading Carrollton.
Richmond got 9 hits in the game to back the solid one-two pitching combination of Whitney Martens and Hayley Clubine. Martens picked up the win as she worked the first 5 innings while giving up 4 hits and 3 walks to go along with 7 strikeouts. Clubine earned the save with 2 innings of 1-hit pitching while facing 7 batters. She struck out a pair and did not allow an earned run.
Baylyn Jennings had 3 of Richmond’s hits with Clubine reaching on a double and a single. The Lady Spartans got one hit each from Megan Phipps, Stephanie Williams, Kayla Hewitt and Hayley Padgett.
“It was not our best defensive effort, but they fought through their mistakes and got the win,” Richmond Coach Staci Maddux said. “We did have some big hits at the right time to get our offense going. Hayley and Baylyn continue to hit the ball really well.”
Maddux said she is looking for a little more consistency in her team’s defensive play.
Richmond trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the third inning and took the lead with a 2-run frame on a single by Clubine. Hewitt led off the fourth for the Lady Spartans with a triple and scored when Alex Phillips grounded out to the shortstop for a 4-2 lead.
Hewitt scored again in the sixth when she led off with a walk and advanced on a passed ball and a Holden error.
Holden pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning and Richmond added its final run as Jennings singled and scored on Williams’ triple.
