J. Robert (Bob) Thompson, 93, of Prairie Village, Kan., passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Bob was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Bonhomme County, S.D. After receiving his bachelor and masters degrees in science, he was an agriculture teacher in South Dakota for 14 years. Bob then went on to become one of the nation’s most respected agri-business executives, managing farmer’s cooperatives in South Dakota, Missouri and Texas in association with Farmland Industries. The Thompson family moved from South Dakota to Richmond in 1959, where Bob managed the Ray Carroll Co., Coop. Bob moved his family to Texas in 1970, and retired to Arizona in 1985, moving to Prairie Village, Kan. in 1995.
Survivors include: two sons, Bill Thompson of Mission Hills, Kan., and Terry Thompson of Austin, Texas; one grandson, Jeff Sloan of Oakland, Calif., and one granddaughter, Eva Thompson of Kansas City, Mo.
His wife, Helen C. Thompson, five siblings, and a daughter, Joyce Thompson Sloan, preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities of Kansas City, Kan.
Memorial services were held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at McGilley State Line Chapel in Kansas City, Mo. The family received friends after the service.
