James Robert Collins, 80, of Millville, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at his home.
James was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Upton, the son of Oliver and Martha (Baker) Collins. He married Eloise Myrtle Dykes of Upton, April 20, 1962; she preceded him in death Sept. 19, 2006.
James was a diesel mechanic and lived in Northeast Kansas City, Mo., where he worked for Consolidated Freightways until he retired in 1989. After James retired, he moved to Rayville and then to Millville, where he took up raising cattle. James was of the Christian faith and had served his country in the Korean War.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, James R. Collins, Jr., and his wife, Gabrielle, of Independence; one daughter and her fiancé, Sheri Terry and Bobby Ford of Richmond; one step-son, Michael West of Chickasha, Okla.; three grandchildren, Joshua James Hendricks, JayLynn Michael Hendricks and James Robert Collins, III; one great-granddaughter, Elise SueLynn Hendricks; and one brother, Sherrill Collins from Myrtle Creek, Oreg.
In addition to his parents and wife, two brothers, Leo Collins and Laurel Collins; one sister, Lela Campbell; and step-daughter Sue Murray, preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the National Rifle Association or the Missouri Sheriff’s Association.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Hickory Ridge Cemetery in Upton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
