Hugh D. Hertzig, 91, of Richmond, died at 9:50 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2008, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Hertzig was born March 25, 1917 in Jamestown, the son of Edward and Mary (Wallenmeyer) Hertzig. He first married Carol Schultz of St. Louis; she preceded him in death on March 11, 1973; he then married Paula Ann Crouch of Richmond, on Sept. 26, 1987; she survives of the home.
Mr. Hertzig was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years before he retired on Feb. 25, 1977. He was a member of the Richmond United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Wakenda Lodge # 52 A.F. and A. M. and was a member of the Ararat Temple. Mr. Hertzig lived in the Hardin and Richmond areas most of his life. He was the owner and operator of the Hertzig Contract Seeding Company before he retired in 2002.
In addition to his wife Paula, survivors include: one daughter, Engel Long of Columbia; one step-daughter, Lechelle Williams and her husband, Jim, of Richmond; two grandchildren, Spencer King and Erin Wilhite and her husband, Shawn; two step-grandchildren, Jacob and Gavin Williams; and three great-grandchildren, Emily, Dalton and Elaina Wilhite.
In addition to his first wife and his parents, one daughter, Hedy Hertzig; and two brothers, Norman Hertzig and Lex Hertzig, preceded him in death.
The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in Richmond.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, July 3, at the Richmond United Methodist Church in Richmond. Memorial services will immediately follow the visitation at 11 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be in Richmond Memory Gardens at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
