Laneta Mae Curtis, 84, of Richmond, died at 9:40 a.m., Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
Laneta was born on October 30, 1923 in Independence, Mo. to Floyd and Easter Mae (Dodson) Bates. She married Gerald Emerson Curtis of Independence on Sept. 12, 1941. He preceded her in death on July 12, 2005, after 63 years of marriage.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Ruby Curtis of Richmond, and Jerry and Lynn Curtis of Madisonville, Ky.; her twin sister, Waneta Allnutt of Richmond; six grandchildren and their spouses, Brandee Curtis, Derek and Lauren Curtis, Laryssa and Ronnie George, Michael and Krystal Kennedy, Linnette and Jason Lay, and Megan and Andy Biehler; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lavern Hirst; a grandson, Douglas Ray “Dougie” Curtis II; and a great-granddaughter, Lillianna Locker Curtis.
Laneta received her high school diploma in Independence. The Curtis’ settled on their family farm in Richmond in 1948. Laneta was a member of the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ in Lexington. She enjoyed flower gardening, tole-painting, music and baking. She was active in her church, the Rainbow Gardening Club, and supported her son’s activities in the Liberty 4H Club, scouting and sports.
The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sun., March 9, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m., Sat., March 8, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery, north of Richmond.
