John H. Atkins, 80, of Lawson, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 at his home.
John was born on Sept. 12, 1927 in Lawson, the son of James Everett and Tommy Fern Atkins. He married Barbara Merritt on June 20, 1954 in Kansas City, Kan. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. John was a farmer and a member of the Canaan Hill Church of the Nazarene, and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include: his wife Barbara, of the home; one son, the Rev. John M. Atkins of Valley City, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan Peoples and her husband, Chaplain Lt. Col. Dwayne Peoples, USAF of Md.; three grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen Atkins and his wife, Betty, of Lawson, Marvin Atkins and his wife, Jeannine, of Mont., and Floyd Ray Atkins and his wife, Rinna, of Gladstone; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Rudd and her husband, Paul, of Lawson, Donna Smoot and her husband, Bill, of Excelsior Springs, Reta Rabe and her husband, Milt, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister-in-law, Nadine Atkins, of Lawson.
His parents, and one brother, J.T. Akins, preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Canaan Hill Church of the Nazarene in Lawson, or the Kansas City Rescue Mission.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday Sept. 25, 2007, at the Polley Funeral Home in Lawson. The family will also receive friends at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 at the Canaan Hill Church of the Nazarene in Lawson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 at the church. Burial will be in the Old Union Cemetery in Lawson.
Arrangements are under the direction of Polley Funeral Home in Lawson.
