Maxine Opal Smith, 81, of Richmond passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in her home.
Born September 7, 1925 in New Boston, Ill., she was the daughter of Estel Lerman and Mary Emily (Cooley) Garrett. On Aug. 6, 1972 in Miami, Okla., she was married to Marvin Howard Smith who survives.
Maxine worked for several years in Higginsville at the State Hospital. She was known in Richmond as being a caregiver in her church and the community and was always there to help. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing and fishing. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church where she had served in the kitchen and the nursery where she was lovingly known as "Grandma" to all of her "kids".
Also surviving are: her children, Kathryn Heatherly, Laura Hager, Nina Hager, Joe Hager, Barbara Piper, Cindy Hager, Markette Kettenbrink and Arthur Hager; six sisters, Bertha, Orpha, Lorene, Mary, Diana and Madeline; two brothers, Freddie and Donnie; 37 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Joseph Hager and two children, Eddie Hager and Ida Hager.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Richmond Assembly of God Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday July 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Richmond Assembly of God Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will take place at a later date in Nauvoo, Ill.
